Constipation Diet

Overeating and eating between meals before the previous meal is digested should be avoided. Such excess overloads clog and retard the whole process of digestion and evacuation of the bowels. Health conscious people, especially girls today do not want to look plump and overgrown. Not realizing that adiposity is caused by bad metabolism and not by taking normal quantities of food, they go on crash diets, eat less wholesome food and satisfy their hunger by taking tea or coffee in excess. All these cause constipation and piles.

Eating refined foods from which the roughage of the original grain has been removed such as white bread, white sugar and polished rice should be avoided. These highly processed food ingredients are concentrated starches, whose real food value has been largely taken from them in the process of refining.

Eating foods made from denatured white flour such as bread, pastry, macaroni, pies, spaghetti, cakes, pancakes, biscuits, and so on should be avoided. So also foods such as puddings should not be eaten.

Likewise eating tinned, preserved and reheated foods should be avoided.

Pulses generally produce more gas during digestion and fried food affects the functioning of the liver. Both should be avoided by those who are constipated.
The habit of regularly eating fresh fruit, dried raisins, prunes, raw salads, vegetables conservatively cooked, unpolished rice and brown bread is very useful.

Timely Intake of Food

The three main meals of the day, breakfast, lunch and dinner should be eaten in time. In the present age, because of a busy life, eating at set hours of the day becomes the commonest to victim. Irregularly eaten food or food and snacks eaten too often affects the digestion and bowel movements leading to constipation and piles. The present day hospitality that one comes across makes a person eat or drink something every so often when he visits a friend or attends a meeting. At parties or other functions food and drinks are served late at night. Getting up late in the morning makes it necessary to hurry in order to reach the place of work and often breakfast is either missed or eaten hurriedly. All these contribute to constipation and piles.
