If you are suffering from severe constipation, chances are you are suffering it because of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Most of the patients who complaint of severe constipation have been diagnosed with IBS, which makes severe constipation a symptom of IBS.
What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
IBS is often confused with ulcerative colitis which makes it quite difficult to diagnose. It is actually a functional gastrointestinal disorder in which the colon shows no proofs of disease such as inflammation or ulcers. It is diagnosed only after all other possible digestive disorders have been ruled out.
Treatment of Severe Constipation:
The following two steps are commonly advised by the doctors for the treatment of severe constipation.
Using Laxatives Carefully:
Laxatives (drug used to promote bowel movements) are mostly given to an individual with severe constipation. However, it should be kept in mind that these are laxatives which, if abused, can be harmful to the colon and over time will damage nerves in the colon resulting in the colon being unable to contract and pass stool through on it own. So, it can be said the treatment for severe constipation, if abused, can become the cause of its further severity. Abuse of enemas (the insertion of a liquid into the bowels via the rectum) for the treatment of severe constipation is also for no good. Since several foods are rich in natural laxatives, you should plan your diet, or your doctor will very likely advise you to do so, as per the medication you are taking for your severe constipation.
Doing More Exercise:
As you know, lack of exercise is one of the most frequent contributors to severe constipation, even if you are regularly exercising and not getting relief in your constipation situation, you should opt for extended periods of exercise. According to US Surgeon General, the recommended time period for exercise is at least 30 minutes everyday for relieving constipation. |
